Where Volunteers Make a Difference

Kids say the darndest things. That's why they are sure to put a smile on your face and keep you young-at-heart. Here are some ways you can brighten your day by working with children this fall.

There is also a need for tutors in grades K-12 in schools throughout Dane County. Tutors work with children one-on-one or in small groups to assist with reading, math and other subjects. There is a special need for tutors that speak a second language, especially Spanish. You can volunteer for as little as an hour or two a week. There is no paid stipend for this program, but volunteer tutors may qualify for a property tax rebate through the Senior Tax Exchange Program (STEP) if they:

  • Are 55 or older
  • Have an annual family income of less than $70,000 (previous year's federal income tax adjusted gross income)
  • Live in the Madison Metropolitan School District

There are other rewards, too - the smile on a child's face when "her tutor" walks into the classroom and the satisfaction of seeing a student learn and grow!

More Opportunities
There are several other unique opportunities to share your skills and interests with the younger generation. You could:

  • Correspond with a student "computer buddy"
  • Work with students in the Youth Apprenticeship or Junior Achievement program
  • Practice job interview skills with teens
  • Provide childcare while parents take classes
  • Share your unique life stories in the oral history program
  • Participate in the innovative restorative justice program in high schools

The old proverb declares that "it takes a village to raise a child," and we hope you will join our village of RSVP volunteers. For more information, contact Andrea Beaster at 608-441-7894 or .

Provides Structure to My Days
“Volunteering has put me in touch with people I would not have normally met. Introduced me to others from different cultural backgrounds. Helped provide structure to my days.”
