Where Volunteers Make a Difference

RSVP of Dane County accepted the Governor's "Senior Corps Program of the Year" award for its Driver Services/Vets Helping Vets program.  The award recognizes the program for its impact on veterans and seniors in Dane County who may be isolated and/or living on a limited income.

With more than 700 volunteer drivers spread throughout Dane County communities, the volunteer program made a real impact - delivering 84,438 meals, providing 8,585 rides to 1,144 passengers, donating 34,563 hours, driving 409,792 miles and all done while saving Dane County an estimated $806,990 if a for-profit service had been hired.

One of the primary goals of this program is to help seniors/veterans to live independently for as long as possible, which is best for the individual and the community in which they live.  This is best understood through the words of a passenger, "I could not afford taxi service to Madison, where my primary doctor and specialists have their offices.  If not for RSVP, I would have to move to a facility in Madison."

RSVP of Dane County was selected by the Serve Wisconsin citizen community as "the Senior Corps program that, over the course of the year, had made significant contributions to Wisconsin through efforts using their invaluable skills and experience."  The award was presented at a ceremony set at Olbrich Gardens, hosted by Serve Wisconsin and the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) State Office to honor state award recipients in eight different categories.  Serve Wisconsin is a 21-member citizen body appointed by the Governor and supports service in Wisconsin primarily by granting AmeriCorps funds through the Corporation for National and Community Service to organizations that involve citizens in service activities that meet human, educational, environmental, public safety, and homeland security needs.
