Tutors Tutors work with children, in kindergarten through 12th grade, in schools throughout Dane County. Volunteer tutors can work with small groups of students or one-on-one assisting with reading, math or other subjects directed by the teacher. As a volunteer, you have the opportunity to share the excitement and joy of helping a child succeed. Tutors assist in creating a learning environment for students that promotes positive self-esteem, confident and independence. Tutors generally volunteer one to two hours per week. For Madison, Sun Prairie, and Verona schools, RSVP serves as the lead agency of the Schools of Hope Project (www.schoolsofhope.org) a collaborative program with United Way of Dane County and the Madison Metropolitan School District. The Schools of Hope Project provides AmeriCorps members who serve as elementary school volunteer coordinators and provide ongoing support for all the reading and math volunteers placed at their schools. RSVP also partners with the Urban League of Greater Madison in placing volunteers in Madison and Sun Prairie middle schools. Classroom Helpers RSVP Classroom helpers assist the teacher in the classroom by doing variety of tasks once or twice a week. Most often teachers request volunteers to help students with reading, math or a special project. Volunteers may also be asked to sort or shelve books, prepare materials or put up a bulletin board.
