NEV (Neighborhood Electric Vehicle) Program - 2009: 25 Volunteers 197 Volunteer Hours

NEV Drivers and NEV Home Delivered Meal Drivers:

We continue with a Pilot Program with the use of Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEVs) in three communities in Dane County, which includes Verona, Mt Horeb and De Forest. RSVP and/or the Senior Centers/Outreach Offices have purchased and/or leased the NEVs, designed to transport and deliver home delivered meals to older adults within their own community. The NEVs are stationed at the local Senior Centers/Outreach Offices and are designed to increase the quality of life to older adults, save valuable resources and help save the environment.

What are the benefits of being an NEV Driver or Home Delivered Meal Driver?

  • Free excess auto, accident and personal liability insurance while on assignment
  • Personal satisfaction of helping others
  • Personal satisfaction of helping out your community and Dane County
  • Quarterly newsletter
  • Annual Volunteer Recognition
  • Flexibility to meet your schedule
  • Ability to meet new people

  • What do NEV Drivers and Home Delivered Meal Drivers receive?
  • One-on-one training
  • Ongoing staff support and training
  • Disabled card use while on assignment
  • I.D. badge
  • Traffic safety material
  • Classroom and parkling lot training
  • AARP Safe Driver class fees paid upon request

  • Who are our passengers?

RSVP works closely with Senior Centers/Outreach Offices throughout Dane County and the City of Monona who serve as RSVP Volunteer Stations to provide for this service. Drivers Services rides are scheduled through local coordinators. Variations of priorities beyond transporting older adults to medical appointments may differ between communities due to needs and resource availability. Trip priorities are listed below:

  • Drive and escort older adults (60 and older) to medical appointments
  • Drive and escort ambulatory older adults to other personal trips (Depends on driver availability.).
  • Younger ambulatory disabled (under 60) may receive rides only if older adults transportation needs are met. RSVP Volunteer Stations make this determination.

How do I get started?

Driver Escorts are needed in Madison and throughout the Dane County area. NEV Drivers and NEV Home Delivered Meal Drivers are currently needed in the areas of De Forest, Mt Horeb and Verona. All of these services enable older adults to remain in their homes as long as possible. If you are a safe driver, willing to use your own vehicle as a Volunteer Driver Escort or Home Delivered Meal Driver or willing to get trained to drive NEV vehicles in one of the three communities listed above, have personal automobile insurance, and can spare a few hours each week to provide this essential service, we would like to talk to you.

Please contact your local Senior Center/ Outreach Office or call Gene Kundert, Driver Services Manager, at 608 441-7896.
