First Book - 2009: 6 Volunteers 33 Volunteer Hours

WHAT IS FIRST BOOK?

First Book is a national nonprofit organization that works through local First Book Advisory Boards to distribute new books to children who, for economic or other reasons, have little or no access to books.  Since the First Book - Dane County Advisory Board was formed in 1998, we have provided over 57,000 new books to local literacy organizations for children.  RSVP volunteers serve on the First Book - Dane County Advisory Board, and help with fundraising and grant reading.

The First Book - Dane County Advisory Board raises money through contributions and grants.  Each year, through a grant application process, local literacy organizations are awarded books based upon funds raised.  In 2009, 11,682 books were awarded to agencies and schools.

Contributions to First Book go a long way.  First Book has negotiated 40-50% discounts with publishers, making the average cost of each book $2.00.
