WHAT IS FIRST BOOK?

First Book is a national nonprofit organization that works through local First Book Advisory Boards to distribute new books to children who, for economic or other reasons, have little or no access to books.  Since the First Book - Dane County Advisory Board was formed four years ago, we have provided over 14,300 new books to local literacy organizations for children.  RSVP volunteers serve on the First Book - Dane County Advisory Board, staff information tables at First Book fairs, and help with grant reading.

The First Book - Dane County Advisory Board raises money through First Book Fairs at local businesses, contributions, and matching grants from the national First Book office.  Each year, through a grant application process, local literacy organizations are awarded books based upon funds raised during the previous year.  In 2002, 3,825 books were awarded to agencies and schools.

Contributions to First Book go a long way.  First Book has negotiated 40-50% discounts with publishers, making the average cost of each book $2.50.  The national First Book office retains 10% of funds raised for administering the program and providing assistance to local Advisory Boards.
