Tutoring and Mentoring

Tutoring

Tutors work with children, in kindergarten through 12th grade, in schools throughout Dane County . Volunteer tutors can work with small groups of students or one-on-one assisting with reading, math or other subjects directed by the teacher.  As a volunteer, you have the opportunity to share the excitement and joy of helping a child succeed.   Tutors assist in creating a learning environment for students that promotes positive self-esteem, confident and independence.  Tutors generally volunteer one to two hours per week.

For Madison , Sun Prairie, and Verona schools, RSVP serves as the lead agency of the Schools of Hope Project (www.mmsd.org/soh) a collaborative project with United Way of Dane County and the Madison Metropolitan School District .  Schools of Hope provides AmeriCorps members who work as school volunteer coordinators.  They provide ongoing support for all the volunteers placed at their schools.

Mentoring

Some children just need another caring adult to visit with them and be interested in their life without an emphasis on academics. Mentors fill that role by visiting with the student on a regular basis in the school setting. The visits emphasize conversation and having fun together in a variety of activities.
